Choosing electrical cable for your project in Ghana
Cable size is not determined by appliance type alone. Have a qualified electrician select the conductor size, protective device and earthing arrangement for your installation before ordering. This is a shopping guide, not a wiring design or installation instruction.
| Use | What to check before buying |
|---|---|
| Lighting circuits | Confirm total load, circuit protection, installation method and run length. Do not choose a cable solely by the number of lights. |
| General sockets | Confirm expected demand and whether the circuit is radial or ring. These arrangements cannot share a universal cable-size or breaker recommendation. |
| Dedicated appliances | Provide the electrician with the appliance rating and manufacturer’s installation requirements. Air conditioners, cookers and water heaters need individual assessment. |
| Long runs and feeders | Ask for voltage-drop and current-carrying-capacity calculations. There is no single cable size or distance threshold suitable for every long run. |
| When to consult an electrician | Before new wiring, circuit alterations, distribution-board work, outdoor wiring or buying cable when the required specification is uncertain. Stop using a circuit with burning smells, hot sockets or repeated tripping and seek professional help. |
Safety checks for buyers in Ghana
Ask your electrician to confirm the certification and inspection requirements applicable to your project with Ghana’s Energy Commission. Check cable specifications and conformity information with the supplier and Ghana Standards Authority where needed.
To reduce the risk of substandard cable, check manufacturer identification, stated conductor material, cross-sectional area, insulation rating and traceable supplier documentation. Price, packaging and a printed size alone do not establish quality or suitability.
Heat, grouped cables, conduit installation and thermal insulation can affect cable capacity. Your electrician must assess these conditions along with earthing and protective devices. Do not simply choose “one size up”, increase a breaker rating or treat a larger cable as a fix for supply-voltage problems.
